Checking Out tells the story of George, the closeted proprietor of The Lonely Pelican, a hotel in Pepsicola,  Florida. His daughter Karin books a drag queen pageant that attracts a host of colorful characters. Among them are Chip, the young drag queen; Buttercup and Lily, two ladies of a certain age on their way to Disney World; Pat and Anthony, judges of the Miss Pepsicola Jellyfish Pageant, and Dave, an aspiring writer who falls head over heels for Karin. Add to that the snarky staff and Karin’s ESL student Sara, and Checking Out becomes a romp through the hotel that touches on love, friendship, and the religious implications of Frosty the Snowman, Checking Out is sometimes comic, sometimes serious, but it is ultimately about the courage to be who you are, with joy.
